Deaf Children's Education

Unschooled young wives attend Adult Literacy Class to achieve primary school equivalency; this is complemented with training in family health and women and child rights. Education increases quality of life, provides new socio-economic opportunities, enhances child care and increases commitment to children’s education.

Due to poverty, shortage of household labour, and/or lack of appreciation for formal education, many children are unable to attend school. However, after the days work is done, boys and girls are excited to attend Shepherd School, where they can achieve primary equivalency.

Adolescent mothers, whose families are unable or unwilling to support them, are provided with academic and vocational training so that they eventually become self-sufficient and are able to care for their child well. Sponsors provide financial support to educate the adolescent and ensure good care for her baby.

Deaf children who are unable to access special needs education are supported to attend boarding schools that offer primary, secondary and technical education for the deaf. Their educational success reduces community stigma toward them and helps them find meaningful employment.

Give the Gift of Education
